Facial Veins

Collections of small blood vessels, particularly on the face are known as telangiectasia or spider veins. They usually have vessels radiating out from a central point like a spider’s legs (hence the name) Although harmless they can be very disfiguring and people can be very self conscious about their appearance.

These lesions can be treated by a process known as diathermy. During diathermy an electrical current passes through a tiny needle causing it to heat up. In the case of telangiectasia the needle is used to seal the central blood vessel, thereby preventing the blood from engorging the “legs “so making it disappear. The actual treatment itself lasts less than a second and is usually virtually painless. For larger lesions local anaesthetic cream can be applied beforehand to numb the area before treatment.
